In progress: Trumpeter M1A1 Abrams with Mine Plow 1/35 Pt.7

In Progress: Been a while since I last posted an update for my Abrams build. As can be seen the Echelon decals have been applied. They were very thin and settle down snuggly.

Just to gauge how the model would look finished, I attached the equipment and stores with Blu-Tac. Originally, I planned on just using Tamiya's Modern US equipment set which is fine but the seams and the hollow backs found on some of the equipment was proving too much of a chore to fix. So I chose to make a few items from scrap material and a plastic shopping bag to replicate the sort of things seen and carried by Abram's tank crews during OIF.

There are still parts to be added or that have broken off during this build which I will attend to shortly.

In Progress: Work on the JAS-39 Gripen is nearing completion. With this update a light wash of a highly diluted mix of acrylic gouache (Paynes Grey) was used to highlight the panel lines after a coating of floor polish was used to seal the model.

Decals and a bit of weathering will follow shortly.

In progress: Trumpeter M1A1 Abrams with Mine Plow 1/35 Pt.6

In Progress: Just a small update for today. I was informed that the Bustle Rack Extension that I using was appropriate for a US Army Abrams but incorrect for a USMC Abrams ( which I am building).

A few options to correct this problem included sourcing the appropriate parts from other Abrams kits or to use the Eduard p.e set ( which seems to be out of production). Well not having those other Abrams kits or having the Eduard set available, I scratch built a BRE form scrap plastic and brass tubing.

While not a 100% accurate, it works and once loaded with equipment & stores it should be just fine.

In Progress: The mine plow has been painted with Humbrol's silver, gun metal and black enamel paints. At this point in time any further work on the mine plow will be put on hold as I try to find out what colour it was painted. There is a small picture of "Hard Licker" (the Abrams that I'm building) at the back of Echelon's instruction but I can't determine if it is green or if it is the same colour as the tank.

In Progress: Finally got around to painting the Abrams. The kit was first painted in black than selected areas were airbrushed in shades of gray for tonal effect. The Abrams was then sprayed with hairspray to replicate a bit of wear and tear once the final coat of paint is applied.

After I weather the Abrams, the CIP's & aerials will be added. Following that I will start work on the mine plow and Tamiya' equipment set.

In Progress: Just a small update for today. An infantry telephone has been scratch built using plastic card and stretch sprue for latch and hinges.

Also decided to use AFV Club's individual track links. While a bit tedious to assemble, they certainly add a new dimension to kit.

In Progress: With this update comes a change to the original plans. Rummaging through the spares box I found some parts from an old Dragon kit for the Abrams. This kit will still be built as a vehicle that participated in OIF but using Echelon Fine Details T35004 decal sheet instead of T35013.

As can be seen I have decided to use the Barrel Depot barrel instead of the kits part. Other additions also include Lionroar's .50cal machine gun barrel. A comparison between it and the kits part can be seen below.

In progress: Trumpeter M1A1 Abrams with Mine Plow 1/35 Pt.1

In Progress: Just started to build Trumpeter's M1A1 Abrams with mine plow in 1/35 scale. This kit will be built as a vehicle that participated in OIF using Echelon Fine Details T35013 decal sheet. Other extras will be from Tamiya's Modern US equipment set and quite possibly Barrel Depot's Abrams replacement gun barrel.

As can be seen in the above two images, the front left section of the turret is quite angular (the right side in the pictures). This poses a minor problem as the front combat identification panel will not sit square.

To fix this problem, scrap pieces of plastic was glued to the turret and sanded off .

As can be seen the front CIP's have been glued in place and are sitting "square". The front combat identification panels were cut out from a desert container.

In Progress: Not quite an "In Progess" feature as most of this build is nearly complete. Italeri's JAS-39 Gripen was built mostly out of the box with the exception of the scratch built FOD covers & RBF tags, a change of armaments from the spares box and if I can't source some aftermarket decals, I'll use the Czech Air Force decals supplied .

In Progress: With this update, we see a ghastly looking T-80. To get to this point, a mixture of Tamiya desert yellow, white and flat yellow was used to paint the turret and hull. While, Tamiya Nato green mixed with a little bit of Tamiya yellow was used for the road wheels.

In progress: Italeri's EA-18G kit converted to a RAAF F/A-18F Pt.3

In Progress: With this update the kit has been painted and is currently drying (off thoroughly ) before a gloss coat & a panel wash. Paints used on the airframe were Gunze Sangyo - FS 36320 & FS36375. Will paint the gray strips on the wings & tails later. Also the windscreen was tinted using Tamiya's clear yellow.

In progress: Italeri's EA-18G kit converted to a RAAF F/A-18F Pt.2

In Progress: With this update the kit has been assembled and is almost ready for some paint.

During the assembly stage, attaching the intakes and the flaps were two problem areas.

Joining the intakes to the fuselage , there was a noticeable step- in particular the left intake. To remedy this problem, I shaved the intakes with my hobby knife and used stretched sprue and Tamiya putty to fill in the gaps. Once dried the intakes were sanded flat.

The other problem area was attaching the the flaps to the wings. In the dry fitting stage (See Pt.1) everything seemed to look right but once attached there was a noticeable gap. By now it was to late to alter or reposition the flaps as the hinges are really delicate and I had no spare ones should I have broken one.

So to fix this problem I used a veneer created from sheet styrene and Dymo tape which worked out well.

In progress: Italeri's EA-18G kit converted to a RAAF F/A-18F Pt.1

In Progress: Yet another Italeri EA-18G kit to be converted into a F/A-18F from either 1 or 6 Sqn RAAF, just haven't decided yet.

Aftermarket items to be used in this build will be decals from Aussie Decals F/A-18F sheet, Wolfpack Design F/A-18F re-fueling probe, Steel Beach ECS Pipes & ACS coaming and Black Box's F/A-18F cockpit.

To date, the flaps have been cut and will placed in the "down" position. The stabilizer has also been cut and will be repositioned.

The intakes have been assembled, sanded and the interior painted white. It shall also get a coat of gray paint to finish it of.

As the Wolfpack Design re-fueling probe is meant to be used in the Hasegawa kit, it was a bit tricky to attach it to the Italeri kit but as can be seen from the images, it can be done.

Description: This a simple drop in replacement afterburner for the Mirage IIIO/E ( for the Italeri kits) in 1/48 scale.

As can be seen the resin set is cast in a creamy white resin and consists of the afterburner and exhaust tubing.

The exhaust tubing is nicely ribbed and the afterburner itself contains the delicate mechanisms which are well replicated.

Included in this decal set are brief notes relating to the aircraft featured and coloured profiles.

The decal themselves appear to be thin with minimal carrier film. The decal sheet contains national markings( for one of the two RAAF P-40's - only), artwork, serial numbers and squadron codes.

The first of two RAAF P-40N's featured in this decal sheet is for an aircraft named
" Hep Cat" from 75 Sqn based at Morotai 1945 and flown by Squadron leader C.Tolhurst.

The second option is for an aircraft flown by Pilot Officer K.Donald from 76 Squadron in June 1945.

The third aircraft featured on this decal sheet named " The Stars look Down" is for a two seat P-51B as used by General Eisenhower during the Normandy landings on D-Day 1944.

As can be seen from the above image, there are no national markings for the P-51B. But this shouldn't pose too much of an issue as the stars 'n' bars can be sourced from the host kit or the spares box.

Just bit more work done on the A-10 since the last update. The canopy was finally painted and tinted with food colouring mixed with Pascoe' Long Life. The landing gear also got a coat of paint and will get a bit more detailing/weathering next update.

Completed: Revell's F-8 Crusader 1/48

This Revell's F-8 Crusader in the markings of a French Navy aircraft.

This kit was built mostly out of the box but the main landing gear was to lengthen to prevent the kit from looking like a tail sitter and to rescribe the panel lines.

The kit decals were used and went on well with Miro-Sol. Gunze-Sangyo paints were used to paint the model and a few coats of Testor’s Dullcoat was used to finish up the model.

Completed: Revell-Monogram's F/A-18C backdated to a F/A-18A

Something a little different in terms of camouflage for an Aussie Hornet was this “Dark Gray” scheme which was tried out by the RAAF during the 90’s. This particular aircraft was from 77 Squadron, the aircraft # was A21-7.

To model this “Dark Gray” Hornet flown by the RAAF I used Revell-Monogram's F/A-18C which I then backdated to an "A "model.

As can be seen from the photos, the flaps and leading edge of the aircraft were cut and re- positioned, using a sharp knife and a metal ruler as a guide. The kit features raised panel lines; they were sanded down and then re-scribed.

The decals for my F/A-18 were from Hawkeye Models Australia, sheet # AAF48-37. You get two decal sheets, with this package. The first one contains national and squadron markings and the second contains the aircraft stencils. Care needs to be taken when handling these decals. As they are not varnished (to prevent yellowing with age), they can be susceptible to scratches.

Basically the painting guide on the decal instructions specify that the aircraft be painted overall in gray. But having seen some photos of the real aircraft, it is rather “patchy” and dirty in appearance. To depict this I used varying shades of gray and applied a light wash to accentuate the panel lines.

Gunze-Sangyo paints were used to paint the model and were sprayed using a Lenco 301 airbrush. And finally to complete the kit I sprayed on several coats of Dullcoat.
